Treatment of respiratory tract infections with fluoroquinolones in Belgium
نویسنده
چکیده
Belgian data on the treatment of respiratory tract infections with antibiotics in ambulatory care showed that fluoroquinolone use remains well controlled. Belgian guidelines have recommended moxifloxacin for CAP outpatients with comorbid conditions or outpatients in whom infection with atypical pathogens needs to be considered. Moxifloxacin is recommended in case of IgE-mediated ß-lactam allergy or severe intolerance to ß-lactam antibiotics when treating COPD exacerbations or when treating upper respiratory tract infections on the rare occasion that antibiotic treatment is warranted. The MIC distribution of moxifloxacin and levofloxacin in S. pneumoniae isolates remained stable during 20042009 and resistance to moxifloxacin and levofloxacin was low (≤ 1%) in Belgium. As the cost-effectiveness of moxifloxacin is influenced by the causative pathogens involved and resistance patterns, it may be advisable to identify patient subgroups in which moxifloxacin is cost-effective.

Treating respiratory tract infections in ambulatory care in Belgium: fluoroquinolone consumption and resistance development.
This study analyses consumption patterns of fluoroquinolones in treating respiratory tract infections in ambulatory care in Belgium and describes susceptibility of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates to fluoroquinolones. Consumption data were obtained from IMS Health. Pneumococcal resistance was investigated in 600 blood isolates collected from 1998 to 2003. Although consumption of fluoroquinolon...

Abstract Background and Objectives: Efflux pumps are one of the main mechanisms for antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli strains. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between 5 different efflux pump genes; acrA, acrB, emrA, emrB and mdtk and fluoroquinolone resistance in E.coli Isolated from patients with urinary tract infections in Qom. Methods: In this descriptive cr...
متن کاملManagement of Community-Acquired Respiratory Tract Infections in an Era of Increasing Antibiotic Resistance
ABSTRACT Community-acquired respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are prevalent conditions in the U.S. and represent a major burden in health care. This article provides an overview of empirical antibiotic treatment options for patients with communityacquired RTIs, including newer classes of agents, such as the respiratory fluoroquinolones and the ketolides. We also discuss the clinical and econo...
متن کاملA Drug for All Seasons
Fluoroquinolones have become one of the mainstays of antibacterial therapy, regarded as a major antimicrobial class, with efficacy against a wide range of important pathogens. And among the fluoroquinolones, levofloxacin continues to stand out as one, if not the, most important fluoroquinolone. While the history of these agents first started in 1962 with the development of nalidixic acid, it wa...
